A systematic review published over a decade ago concluded that patient experience was positively associated with patient safety. This study revisits the relationship between patient experience and patient safety, taking into account more recently published literature and substantial policy, practice and technological changes. This systematic review highlights that improving patient experience can support patient safety efforts, encouraging healthcare providers and policymakers to treat them as interdependent priorities in quality improvement strategies. This study recommends adopting a more granular approach to future research; examining associations at the subtheme level to better understand how specific patient experience and safety measures relate.
