An engineer in Pakistan, and an Uber driver in Canada.” Before migrating to Canada from Karachi, Anwar worked as a civil engineer for the municipal government and held a degree from one of Pakistan's most prestigious engineering schools. In Pakistan, this professional identity carried status, recognition, and a clear sense of self and social position. After arriving in Canada, that recognition disappeared abruptly. Reflecting on this shift, Anwar explained that he no longer “recognized” himself, requiring him to adjust to that change during settlement.
