Abstract
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks insulin-producing ß cells in the pancreas, causing a deficiency in insulin (). T1DM is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in children, although its prevalence varies considerably across regions worldwide (). 589 million adults (20-79 years) are living with diabetes worldwide (). Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are the two main types, with type 2 diabetes accounting for the majority (>85%) of total diabetes prevalence (). The total number of adults with diabetes is predicted to rise to 853 million by 2050 (). As of 2024, an estimated 9.15 million people globally have a clinical diagnosis of T1DM, of whom 22.3% (2.04 million) live in low- and middle-income countries ().
