Abstract

HIV/AIDS remain a major global public health problem, with 40.4 million people living with HIV, with ongoing transmission in all countries. Globally, 19% of new HIV diagnoses are contributed by young women aged 15-24, 4000 Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) acquire HIV weekly. In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the robust growth of the AGYW population contributes to 25% of new HIV infections. In Tanzania, HIV the prevalence of HIV among people aged 15 years and older is 4.4%. Variations in HIV prevalence by residence and gender exist in the country. Two per cent of women aged 15-24 years are infected with HIV/AIDS, with AGYW accounting for 80% of all new HIV infections. A multitude of factors contribute to the high risk of HIV infection among AGYW in SSA, including biological, socioeconomic, and cultural factors. These factors limit access to and utilization of essential HIV prevention and care services. HTS serves as an entry point for HIV prevention, diagnosis and early linkage to treatment. HTS further facilitates the timely initiation of ant-retroviral therapy, supports risk reduction counselling and strengthens prevention efforts. As such, effective HTS is crucial to achieving UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets by ensuring AGYW are aware of their HIV status and are linked to appropriate care and support services. Factors associated with the uptake of HTS among AGYW reported in the literature can be broadly classified at individual, interpersonal, health system and contextual levels. At the individual level, perceived enablers include engaging in high-risk sexual behavior, prior HIV testing experience, motivation to stay healthy, habitual testing behavior, and higher education achievement. Health system level perceived enablers include improved access to HIV testing services, comprehensive HIV education to raise awareness of HTS. At the contextual level, supportive social networks, marital status and higher socioeconomic status have been reported as important perceived enablers of HTS uptake.
