Abstract
Self-care is the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain well-being, and cope with illness and disability, with or without the support of healthcare personnel (World Health Organisation, ). Postpartum sepsis is a life-threatening condition characterized by organ dysfunction caused by infection occurring during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) (Pundir and Coomarasamy, ; World Health Organisation, ). Puerperal sepsis presents with foul-smelling vaginal discharge, abdominal tenderness, fever, and delayed uterine involution and is associated with factors such as prolonged rupture of membranes, pelvic infection, multiple vaginal examinations, and mode of delivery (World Health Organisation, ; Kumar and Yadav, ; Seboka , ). Globally, puerperal sepsis is among the preventable leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality in both developing and developed countries (Atlaw ., ; Plante ., ; Kumar and Yadav, ). The evidence indicates that puerperal sepsis further causes pelvic infection and infertility if not treated early (World Health Organisation, ; Christiana ., ). Moreover, when mothers suffer from puerperal sepsis, they are unable to care for their children, which increases the chance of early neonatal loss (Bellizzi ., ; Fenny ., ). Worldwide, approximately 260,000 maternal deaths occur annually, with the majority occurring in low-and middle-income countries, particularly in Africa. Maternal infections, including puerperal sepsis, account for about 10–15% of these deaths (World Health Organisation, UNICEF, UNFPA, ). In developing countries, puerperal sepsis continues to be a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality, responsible for about 15% of maternal deaths (Berhan and Berhan, ; Lindtjørn ., ; Souza ., ).
