Abstract
Given the scarcity of local data on young-onset stroke in Honduras and Central America, hospital-based studies may provide valuable preliminary evidence to characterize clinical profiles, identify modifiable risk factors, and inform future regional surveillance and prevention strategies. Stroke is defined as the presence of acute signs and symptoms of focal brain injury that persist for 24 h or more, or that cause death within 24 h (updated in CM-11, 2022) (). In 2019, there were 12.2 million (95% : 11.0–13.6) incident cases of stroke, 101 million (93.2–111) prevalent cases, 143 million (133–153) disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to stroke, and 6.55 million (6.00–7.02) deaths from this cause (). In 2021, stroke was the third leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 10% of all deaths ().
