Abstract
This study examined over 30 000 inpatient surgical admissions using routinely collected electronic health record data from a large tertiary care hospital, enabling real-world evaluation of alcohol screening across diverse surgical populations. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C) screening tool was embedded directly into hospital intake workflows, allowing assessment of both implementation feasibility and predictive utility during routine surgical care. A comprehensive analytic strategy, including multivariable regression, survival analysis, Cox proportional hazards modelling and feature importance modelling, was used to rigorously examine associations between alcohol risk and postoperative outcomes, with attention to confounding and variable selection.
