Abstract

Ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) to capture mood, mental health symptoms and online exposures in close-to-real time, minimising recall bias, combined with a longitudinal design to capture changes both within and between participants across a 5-year age range, enabling investigation of the causal role of social media exposure on mental health by age; Matched parent/carer and adolescent dyads to assess associations with digital parenting as well as data collection before and ~6, 12 and 18 months after the introduction of the Social Media Minimum Age legislation, enabling examination of the potential impacts of the Australian government policy. In contrast, potential limitations include limited generalisability due to under-representation of lower socio-economic groups, diverse genders and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples;
