Abstract

This study analysed over 7.5 million hospitalisation records from 30 tertiary paediatric hospitals across China, providing one of the largest and most geographically diverse datasets used to examine coding-based admission-discharge diagnostic inconsistency in a paediatric population. An International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 code–based approach was employed to define diagnostic inconsistency, offering an objective and reproducible method that minimises the subjectivity inherent in clinician-reported assessments. Mixed-effects linear regression models with hospitals as random effects were used to account for clustering within hospitals when estimating the impact of diagnostic inconsistency on length of stay and total expenses.
