Abstract

Menthol reduces the harshness of tobacco and increases appeal and addiction potential among young people. Menthol tobacco products are disproportionately marketed to certain populations; use varies by sociodemographic and mental health factors. More than 500,000 US middle and high school students used menthol tobacco products in 2023 and 2024. Compared with those using nonmenthol products, students using menthol products started at younger ages, used more frequently, and — among cigarette smokers — made fewer quit attempts. Menthol tobacco product use also differed by mental health status. Strengthening policies that limit access to menthol tobacco products may reduce initiation and dependence among young people, including groups with disproportionate use.
