Abstract

The tactical analyst is a highly demanded role in professional football staff (), due to his support to the technical staff by analysing the opponents through video, studying their behaviour, patterns, and movements, and providing strategic proposals. Moreover, analysts often contribute to examining their own team's performance at different stages of the competition. To this end, two of the principal skills necessary for this position are understanding the game and a clear observation methodology (). Sarmento et al. () emphasised that collective system behaviours represent a key area of analysis in team sports. Within this framework, the behaviour adopted by teams in offensive and defensive phases to achieve their objectives in a match can be defined as their playing style (). Playing style seems to develop a crucial role in predictions of opportunity to score, being identified as the cause and solution for different scoring models (). Nevertheless, the literature reveals diverse conceptualizations and methodological approaches to defining and analysing playing styles (–). In an effort to identify playing styles, Fernández-Navarro () conducted a study in which professional coaches recognized 14 distinct styles, based on the phases of play outlined by Hewitt et al. (). These included direct play, possession, crossing, inner play, playing in the wings, vertical, high pressure, middle block, retreat, individual marking, pressure after losing the ball, counterattack, fast attack after regaining and set piece. Other quantitative approaches have sought to identify playing styles through data analysis and multivariate techniques (). While such methods offer insights into style variability, playing style remains a complex and multidimensional concept to operationalize (, ). Therefore, incorporating more qualitative analyses of real-world processes could enhance the scientific development of this field ().
