Abstract

Focus marks the central locus of information transmission in an utterance and corresponds to the constituent intended by the speaker to attract the listeners’ primary attention (; ). Focus lends itself to multiple taxonomies. In line with , the current study adopts the binary division between natural focus and contrastive focus. Such a dichotomy delineates a core divergence in prosodic realization: natural focus emerges under default information-structural configurations, while contrastive focus is a marked option deliberately used for contrastive purposes to highlight a constituent that is already given in the discourse or mutually known in the context. Natural focus, also referred to as default focus in some studies, means that in the absence of special pragmatic or syntactic factors, the focus of an utterance in Chinese generally occurs at the end of the sentence (). This observation is consistent with the end-focus principle, according to which new or salient information tends to appear in sentence-final position. Contrastive focus occurs when a speaker intends to contrast or correct particular information, allowing focus to appear in different positions within a sentence (). Whereas natural focus primarily introduces new information, contrastive focus highlights selected information and may be realized through prosodic prominence, syntactic devices, or both ().
