Abstract

The U.S. has traditionally been a primary driver of science-based public health policy and multilateral health cooperation through the World Health Organization (WHO). Following the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, public health policymaking now increasingly balances scientific, social, and political considerations. Since the start of the second Trump administration, structural reforms have been enacted, including consolidation of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services sub-agencies, reductions in federal workforce, modifications to childhood vaccine recommendations, withdrawal from the WHO, and the scaling down of health programs of the United States Agency for International Development. To address global health security uncertainties, the Republic of Korea should strengthen its independent disease surveillance capabilities, establish science-based communication strategies to sustain vaccine confidence, and broaden its bilateral and international cooperation channels to mitigate potential threats.
