Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronically progressive systemic metabolic disorder, which is well known for hyperglycemia due to defects in insulin secretion and/or action [, ]. There are about 346 million DM patients worldwide, and by 2030, that figure is expected to be doubled. DM is currently considered a significant global public health problem [, ]. Especially in developing nations, the burden of Visual Impairment (VI) and life-threatening complications is observed [–]. Cataract, which is the top cause of avoidable blindness in both the general and diabetic communities, is characterized by a gradual transparency loss of the ocular crystalline lens [, ]. The number of people who are blind or have moderate to severe VI due to cataract is higher in older populations (15.2 and 78.8 million, respectively) []. Half a million and more than one million cases of blindness and VI in Ethiopia are attributed to cataract, respectively [, ]. The burden of cataract among the diabetic population is rising globally and is being considered a public health concern [, ]. Cataract extraction is simple and the most effective management option for cataract. Especially in the diabetic community, the prognosis is poor, and prevention is quite challenging [, ]. Social and economic burdens related to DM and DM related cataract has been challenging the well-being of resource-constrained developing nations like Ethiopia [–]. Numerous cross-sectional studies conducted on DM patients found significant association between cataract and variables such as age, sex, duration of DM, proliferative diabetic retinopathy, glycemic management, density lipoprotein, and hypertension [, , –].
