Abstract

Conversational artificial intelligence (AI) tools have become increasingly prevalent worldwide []. In Taiwan, the most widely adopted of these tools is the Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) []. The technology at the core of ChatGPT is a large language model (LLM)—a type of conversational AI system based on the GPT framework—which in turn is based on the Transformer deep learning architecture []. This model employs a self-attention mechanism to effectively capture long-range contextual dependencies among words. Through multilayer encoding and decoding structures, the Transformer facilitates high-performance sequence modeling. ChatGPT demonstrates remarkable adaptability in terms of contextual comprehension, precision in response generation, cross-domain knowledge integration, logical reasoning, and multilingual communication [, , ]. Its ability to interpret natural language and produce responses that are both coherent and conversational enables users to interact with the system in a manner resembling everyday dialogue. Since its launch, ChatGPT has gained global popularity, rapidly amassing hundreds of millions of daily active users (see ). Summary of the key preliminary empirical studies on problematic ChatGPT use.
