Abstract
Kratom ( Korth, Rubiaceae) is a tree that belongs to the coffee family that originated in Southeast Asia. Kratom has been available in the US for at least two decades, likely longer as a specialty grown tree in the Southeast United States., As the global market for kratom continues to expand, so too does the diversity of the products derived from the kratom plant. Kratom is mainly consumed in Southeast Asia by chewing the fresh leaves of the tree or preparing a tea decoction. Kratom is traditionally used as a treatment for alleviating pain, reducing fatigue, improving gastrointestinal conditions, and reducing fever., There are reports of increasing diversification of kratom in its related uses, such as self-treatment of mood disorders, which includes depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorders, enhanced focus, and boosting energy levels. For centuries, kratom has been used in the form of native leaves. Recently, kratom has been widely diversified and made commercially available in concentrated extracts, isolates, edibles, capsules, and tea bag preparations. The potency of kratom depends on the formulation. Studies have shown that the onset of action of capsules and extract powders are faster in comparison to tea bag preparations and loose powder. Extract powders and capsules can contain higher amounts of alkaloids and allow for the ingestion of larger quantities to circumvent the unpleasant and bitter taste of the leaf.
