Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition emerging in early childhood. It is characterized by challenges in social interaction, communication, and sensorimotor behaviors, leading to restricted, repetitive behaviors and interests. For diagnosis, symptoms must cause impairment in daily functioning to establish the diagnosis. The age at which functional impairment becomes apparent varies. It depends on individual traits and environmental factors. The manifestations of ASD also differ between people and throughout a lifetime. Some individuals with ASD live independently, while others have severe disabilities and need ongoing support

. Children and adolescents with ASD need assistance in behavioral, educational, health, recreational, and family support areas. These needs impact the mental health and financial well-being of individuals, families, and society

. People with ASD worldwide often experience stigmatization, discrimination, and human rights violations. Access to services and support for these individuals is often lacking. Individuals with ASD have higher rates of depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, and epilepsy than people without ASD. However, early and continuing interventions can improve development and well-being. Timely evidence-based psychosocial interventions help autistic children communicate and interact socially.
