Abstract

Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable premature death and illnesses globally. Smokers lose about 10 years in life expectancy, with an estimated 1 in 2 smokers succumbing to tobacco-related illnesses. It is estimated that tobacco will claim over 1 billion lives in the 21st century. In 2019 the prevalence of tobacco smoking in sub-Saharan Africa was 2.9% among women and 17.5% among men, with notable differences by subregion: Central Africa, 1.7% among women and 20.7% among men; East Africa, 3.1% among women and 17.6% among men; Southern Africa, 8.7% among women and 34.7% among men; and West Africa, 1.8% among women and 12.7% among men.
