Abstract

Cancer in the 21st century represents a major public health problem worldwide, imposing a significant social and economic burden []. Since the first global estimates of the cancer burden were published in the 1980s, breast cancer has been consistently reported as the most frequently diagnosed cancer type among women []. Today, breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women worldwide and contributes substantially to the global cancer burden, accounting for approximately 24% of morbidity and mortality among women affected by cancer [–]. According to the most recent data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and GLOBOCAN 2022, approximately 2.0 million new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed worldwide in 2022. Breast cancer was ranked as the second most commonly diagnosed cancer, accounting for 11.5% of all new cancer cases, and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths, representing 6.8% of total cancer mortality [, , , –].
