Abstract
Advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART) over the past 25 years have made it possible for people living with HIV (PLHIV) to live a near-normal life expectancy. PLHIV must be consistently engaged in care and able to access uninterrupted ART to achieve and maintain viral suppression throughout their lives. Virtual communication channels have become increasingly commonplace over the past decade, changing the landscape of how people connect to and access information and services. In health care settings, COVID-19-related lockdowns and social distancing requirements meant virtual channels rapidly became necessary and, often, the predominant means of providing care. FHI 360 and partners worked to develop a model for introducing virtual approaches to HIV-related services across the HIV treatment cascade from initial diagnosis to achieving viral suppression. This model was subsequently adapted and published in guidance from global normative bodies. FHI 360’s updated telehealth framework, which spans the client care continuum and has been adapted to be relevant beyond HIV, illustrates how virtual approaches can support clients from initial planning and outreach through service delivery, re-engagement, and quality improvement ().
