Abstract
Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) parasomnias are characterized by incomplete awakenings from deep NREM sleep and comprise disorders of arousal, including confusional arousals, sleep terrors, somnambulism, and sexsomnia, as well as other NREM parasomnias such as sleep-related eating disorder. These conditions arise predominantly from slow-wave sleep (non-rapid-eye movement sleep stage 3 – N3) and are typically associated with impaired awareness, reduced responsiveness to external stimuli, and partial or complete amnesia for the episode. NREM parasomnias may involve complex and seemingly purposeful behaviors. Reported manifestations range from sitting up in bed or walking through the home to interacting with objects in the environment or performing goal-directed actions. Previous clinical observations have highlighted the remarkable diversity of behavioral patterns occurring during these episodes. Adult NREM parasomnias are facilitated by factors that increase sleep instability or promote slow-wave sleep, including sleep deprivation, irregular sleep schedules, shift work, psychological stress, and comorbid sleep disorders.,,
