Abstract

Arterial Hypertension (HTN) is a public health problem and is the most important and preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Uncontrolled HTN is strongly associated with premature deaths, and high systolic blood pressure is a leading risk factor for disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) lost. The prevalence of HTN is increasing, with global population growth and ageing as the main factors. HTN is estimated to affect approximately 33% of adults aged 30–79 years globally, with only 21% of these patients having it controlled. In Portugal, the prevalence of HTN among adults aged 25–74 years is 36%, with control rates varying between 42.5% and 71.3%. Uncontrolled HTN is correlated with a higher risk of complications, and medication adherence plays a critical role in blood pressure control.
