Abstract
Ingestion of foreign bodies (FBs) is a frequent cause of emergency consultation, particularly in children, individuals with psychiatric conditions, or incarcerated populations. While 80–90% of ingested FBs pass through the gastrointestinal tract without intervention, a small percentage result in complications such as obstruction, perforation, or hemorrhage. Bezoars composed of non-food materials, such as sponges, are an uncommon cause of intestinal obstruction and often occur in the context of psychiatric illness or pica. Here, we report a case of a sponge bezoar causing small bowel obstruction in a young woman with a longstanding history of eating disorders and voluntary FB ingestion.
