Abstract

Black women in the United States are more than 3 times as likely to die from pregnancy‐related causes and twice as likely to experience maternal morbidity compared with White women., Because race is a social construct, observed racial disparities in pregnancy outcomes reflect the impact of racism rather than innate biological differences. Critical Race Theory, developed by Ford and Airhihenbuwa, provides a framework for understanding how racism and discrimination are embedded within social structures and how these systems perpetuate inequities in maternal health., In support of this notion, extensive research has indicated that Black women in the United States experience biological wear and tear, referred to as “weathering,” from repeated exposure to discrimination and stress over the life course, which in turn increases the risk of adverse health outcomes., , , , However, to fully address these inequities, it is critical to consider structural racism through an intersectional lens. Ideals of “motherhood” have long centered on being White, middle class, and married, excluding and stigmatizing women who are racially minoritized, low income, young, or single.
