Abstract
The agricultural system has been confronted with a broad array of challenges that demand an increase in crop yield with minimal damage to the environment as a result of an overreliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides during recent decades. Due to growing concern for the safety of the food produced, as well as soil health, biodiversity, and climate change, sustainable food production is becoming more popular in the agriculture industry. Likewise, consumers have expressed a greater desire to purchase sustainable products. Therefore, crop improvement and sustainable agriculture are two of the primary research focuses of the plant sciences in developing strategies that do not have adverse environmental effects. Plant biostimulants have become one of the promising strategies in respect of improving plant growth, yield and quality with consideration of sustainability. Plant biostimulant refers to a naturally occurring substance or microorganism that, when applied to plants or their rhizosphere, has the ability to influence a plant’s physiological processes, enhance the efficiency of nutrient use, improve a plant’s tolerance of both biotic and abiotic stresses, and stimulate the production of bioactive compounds, in addition to providing direct nutrient input. Biostimulants differ from conventional agronomic chemicals in that they regulate plant metabolism and signal pathway activity to support plant growth under both ideal and stressed situations. Extracts originating from plant sources are one of the most critical classifications of natural biostimulants because their concentration of bioactive materials (like phenolic compounds, amino acids, polysaccharides, vitamins, and phytohormones) is high relative to other categories of biostimulants. Many studies have shown that the use of plant extracts increases food production by improving photosynthesis, root growth, nutrient absorption, antioxidant levels, and producing secondary metabolites in many types of crops. Due to these qualities, plants extracts can be important tools for improving the yield and quality (mainly phytochemicals) of medicinal and aromatic plants due to their high level of yield and phytochemical composition.
