Abstract
Obesity and overweight are among the major public health problems worldwide [], ranking third after smoking and high blood pressure as a cause of illness, and are the most prevalent non-contagious diseases in affluent nations [–]. Globally, obesity accounts for 0.7%–2.8% of total healthcare costs, with medical costs for individuals with obesity being 30% higher than for those at a healthy weight []. In Iran, according to 2021 statistics, 25.8% are adults with obesity []. Among common comorbidities, mental disorders are a burden to individuals with severe obesity who are to undergo surgical treatment []. The findings of a related meta-analysis showed that the most frequent psychiatric condition among candidates seeking bariatric surgery was anxiety []. Preoperative anxiety is prevalent and significantly impacts surgical outcomes []. It remains a critical concern that can negatively impact surgical outcomes, including increased postoperative pain, length of hospitalization, and risk of psychological complications []. This anxiety often arises from numerous factors, including fear of surgery and anesthesia complications, amplifying the necessity for effective management strategies [].
