Body mass index (BMI) has traditionally been used to classify obesity and to identify patients most at risk of obesity‐related outcomes, but its use is criticized for not accounting for age, gender, muscle mass, metabolic milieu, and distribution of adipose tissue. Because of this, other systems were developed to attempt to better classify risks, including the Edmonton Obesity Staging System (EOSS). The EOSS was developed in nonpregnant populations to classify and stratify management of patients with obesity based on the presence of risk factors as shown in Table  [].
