Abstract

The subtribe Pleurothallidinae Lindl. [] is the most diverse lineage within the family Orchidaceae, comprising 46 genera and almost 5500 accepted species [,,]. In Mexico it is represented by 22 genera and about 230 species [,]. The intergeneric relationships within Pleurothallidinae have been well studied and its genera are currently circumscribed as monophyletic groups based on both morphological and molecular evidence [,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,]. In contrast, intrageneric relationships remain poorly understood in several genera of the subtribe. Moreover, species delimitation has not been thoroughly assessed within complexes of morphologically similar taxa exhibiting wide geographic distribution. Lindl. [] is a genus of Pleurothallidinae whose phylogenetic position place it in close relationship to Luer and to a clade comprising Pfizer, Schltr. and (Luer) Luer []. includes just under 120 described species, distributed from southern and central-east of Mexico to Bolivia and southern Brazil, including the Antilles []. Species richness is highest in Costa Rica (48 sp.), Panama (34 sp.), Colombia (31 sp.), Ecuador (31 sp.) and Nicaragua (19 sp.) [,,,,,,]. Plants of grow as epiphytes or lithophytes and occur across an elevational range from sea level to approximately 2400 m [,,,,,]. The first species currently assigned to were originally described from plants collected in Jamaica: Sw., Sw. and Sw. []. Later, Sprengel [] transferred these taxa to R.Br. Lindley [] established the genus , including those three species together with Lindl., Lindl. and Lindl., although he did not designate a nomenclatural type for the genus. At present, only (Sw.) Lindl. and (Sw.) Mutel (=) remain within .
